When Ehlert was five he was blind for sixty-three days. It came on after a tumble down two flights of wooden stairs. He was knocked out cold. There was nothing scary about that time in his life. In fact, Ehlert learned how to pry open the pores in his skin to read the world. It didn't stop after his sight came back (suddenly, one morning in May). You can see how he leans into the spaces that the sun shines unfettered.
